GO Battle League Glossary

Anti-meta/Anti-metagame
Describes Pokémon that are chosen to counter Pokémon commonly used in Trainer Battles.

Appraisal
An assessment of a Pokémon including its size, when it was caught, and the Pokémon’s Attack, Defense, and HP stats.

Attack
A value representing how much relative damage a Pokémon will deal when it uses a Fast Attack or Charged Attack against an opposing Pokémon. Attack is one of three individual strengths that can be revealed when a Pokémon is appraised.

Base Stats
The inherent strengths of each species of Pokémon that determine a species’ general range of possible Attack, Defense, and HP stats. A Pokémon’s base stats cannot be changed, but its stats will be affected further by its individual strengths.

Bulk
A rough description of a Pokémon’s defensive capability based on its HP and Defense.

Candy
An item that can be used to power up or evolve Pokémon, teach Pokémon new attacks, or purify Shadow Pokémon. Candy can be obtained by catching Pokémon, trading Pokémon, transferring Pokémon to Professor Willow, or converting Rare Candy.

Charged Attack
An attack that requires energy to perform.

Core
Two or three Pokémon that work well together on a team.

CP (Combat Points)
A general measurement of a Pokémon’s strength based on a variety of factors, including the Pokémon’s Attack, Defense, and HP.

Damage
A measurement of the HP a Pokémon loses when hit by an attack from an opposing Pokémon. Damage dealt depends on a variety of factors, including both Pokémon’s types, the type of attack used, and the target Pokémon’s Defense stat.

Defense
A value representing how much relative damage a Pokémon will take when hit by an opponent’s attack. Defense is one of three individual strengths that can be revealed when a Pokémon is appraised.

DPS (Damage per Second)
A measure of how much damage an attack can deal when used multiple times over the course of a battle.

Energy
Energy powers Charged Attacks. Each use of a Fast Attack generates energy, and different Fast Attacks generate different amounts of energy. When a Pokémon uses a Charged Attack, some of the energy it has accumulated will be consumed.

EPS (Energy per Second)
A measure of how much energy a Fast Attack generates when used multiple times over the course of a battle.

Fast Attack
An attack performed by tapping on the screen during battle. Each Fast Attack will build energy used for Charged Attacks.

Great League
One of the sub-leagues within the GO Battle League. Great League permits Pokémon with a CP of 1,500 or less to participate.

HP
Hit Points (HP) show how healthy a Pokémon is, indicating how much damage it can take before it faints. HP is one of three individual strengths that can be revealed when a Pokémon is appraised.

Individual Strengths
The innate affinity each individual Pokémon has for Attack, Defense, and HP. Individual strengths can be seen when a Pokémon is appraised. A Pokémon with a higher Attack individual strength will gain Attack faster than a Pokémon of the same species with a lower Attack individual strength.

Lead
The first Pokémon sent into battle. A strong lead typically has good matchups against many other Pokémon.

Level
The basic strength of a Pokémon represented by the white curve directly below the CP value on its detail page. As a Pokémon levels up, its stats may increase.

Master League
One of the sub-leagues within the GO Battle League. Master League places no limits on the CP a Pokémon can have to participate.

Meta/Metagame
Describes Pokémon commonly used in Trainer Battles.

Premier Cup
A sub-league category in which Legendary Pokémon are not permitted.

Protect Shield: S
A shield that prevents a Pokémon from taking damage from an opponent’s Charged Attack. A Trainer has three seconds to activate a Protect Shield once an opponent selects their Pokémon’s Charged Attack, and each Trainer is allotted two Protect Shields per battle.

Purified Pokémon
A Pokémon that was previously a Shadow Pokémon and has been purified. Purified Pokémon receive a bonus to each of their stats and require less Candy and Stardust to power up. Purified Pokémon can learn Return, an exclusive Charged Attack.

Shadow Pokémon
A Pokémon that was made stronger by Team GO Rocket through unnatural means. They deal more damage in battle than non-Shadow Pokémon but also receive more damage from opponents’ attacks.

Same-Type Attack Bonus
The additional damage done when a Pokémon uses an attack that matches its type (for example, a Fire-type Pokémon using the Fire-type attack Ember).

Shadow Bonus
Extra damage dealt by Shadow Pokémon when using Fast Attacks or Charged Attacks. The amount of extra damage is shown to the right of the number indicating an attack’s normal damage number.

Switch Advantage
The advantage a player gains when the opponent switches Pokémon first. The opponent won’t be able to switch Pokémon for a short time afterward, allowing the player to switch in a Pokémon that has a good matchup against the opponent’s Pokémon.

TM (Technical Machine)
An item that allows Trainers to teach a Pokémon a new attack. Fast TMs and Charged TMs are used to change a Pokémon’s Fast Attacks and Charged Attacks, respectively. When a TM is used on a Pokémon, the Pokémon will learn a random attack from the list of Fast Attacks or Charged Attacks it can learn. Elite Fast TMs and Elite Charged TMs allows Trainers to choose which attack the Pokémon will learn.

Type Advantage
The advantage a Pokémon has over another due to their types. For example, a Fire-type Pokémon has a type advantage over a Grass-type Pokémon.

Type
Types interact like rock-paper-scissors, where certain types are stronger against other types. For example, Electric-type attacks are strong against Flying-type Pokémon. An attack usually has a single type. Pokémon may have one or two types.

Ultra League
One of the sub-leagues within the GO Battle League. The Ultra League permits Pokémon with a CP of 2,500 or less to participate.
