An Early Look at Cards from the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Temporal Forces Expansion

Check out a brand-new ACE SPEC card, Iron Crown’s debut as a Pokémon ex, and more from the upcoming expansion.

The ranks of Ancient and Future Pokémon continue to grow! Powerful new Pokémon, the return of ACE SPEC cards, and gorgeous artwork await in the Scarlet & Violet—Temporal Forces expansion. Arriving on March 22, 2024, this expansion includes over 160 cards. Let’s take an early look at some of the exciting cards that are changing the game in this upcoming Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion.

Gengar ex

Watch in fear as the Shadow Pokémon seemingly reaches through the card frame, its eyes and smile alight with disruption and trickery. Nisota Niso’s portrayal of Gengar appropriately matches the glee that you might feel when taking advantage of its Gnawing Curse Ability. This Ability puts damage counters on your opponent’s Pokémon whenever they attach an Energy card from their hand to one of their Pokémon. Your opponent needs to attach Energy to attack, but they’ll make it easier for you to take a Knock Out in the process!

Buddy-Buddy Poffin

Battle VIP Pass is leaving the Standard format on April 5, 2024, but don’t worry: Buddy-Buddy Poffin is ready to save the day! This handy Item card lets you search your deck for up to 2 Basic Pokémon with 70 HP or less and put them on your Bench—it’s a perfect fit for decks built around powerful Pokémon ex, like Charizard ex and Gardevoir ex, that rely on evolving from low-HP Basic Pokémon.

Neo Upper Energy

ACE SPEC cards were first introduced in the Black & White—Boundaries Crossed expansion and have traditionally been powerful Item and Pokémon Tool cards. They do come with a caveat, however—only one ACE SPEC card can be included in a deck. For the first time, a Special Energy card is being released with the ACE SPEC trait and its associated power level. Neo Upper Energy counts as 2 Energy of any type if it’s attached to a Stage 2 Pokémon—making it perfect for both swinging the game in your favor with a single Energy attachment and adding a bit of extra style to your deck thanks to its hot pink design and unique foil treatment.

Drampa

  • Illustrator: Mékayu

Drampa is known for its exceptionally kind demeanor and playfulness toward children—these aspects of its personality are perfectly captured by illustrator Mékayu in this card art! In a scene that looks like it’s been taken straight out of a fairy tale, Drampa peacefully flies across a city with two children on its back. There is another side to Drampa, though—if its friends are wronged, it becomes exceptionally angry. Its Raging Cannon attack represents that anger perfectly: it does 220 damage if all of your Benched Pokémon are damaged.

Iron Crown ex

Beauty, power, and justice—all three are evoked by this special illustration rare featuring Iron Crown ex in a solemn pose among trees bursting with cherry blossoms. It’s difficult not to be impressed by nagimiso’s portrayal of the powerful Paradox Pokémon flanked by the moon. And Iron Crown ex’s majestic strength isn’t all in its aesthetic value: its Cobalt Command Ability increases damage from your Future Pokémon’s attacks by 20. This Ability stacks, meaning that if you have four Iron Crown ex in play, your Future Pokémon’s attacks can do up to 80 more damage for a full futuristic beatdown.

You’ll find these amazing cards and plenty more when the Scarlet & Violet—Temporal Forces expansion launches on March 22, 2024.
