Of course, while they might live harmoniously, you can still enjoy fierce Pokémon TCG battles! If anything, the fearsome Pokémon ex and highly useful ACE SPEC cards ensure that plenty of dramatic matches lie ahead. And as always, the artwork is also a journey in and of itself, offering a fresh perspective on some of your favorite Pokémon. Now, let’s take a peek at some of the memorable art and cards you’ll find in the Scarlet & Violet—Twilight Masquerade expansion, officially available May 24, 2024.

Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex

Artist Yano Keiji created a stunning, fierce, fiery Pokémon with their vision of Ogerpon in its Hearthflame Mask. Opponents will feel the burn with its Wrathful Hearth attack that does 20 damage for each damage counter on Ogerpon. Conjure a conflagration with the Dynamic Blaze attack, which dictates that if your opponent’s Active Pokémon is an Evolution Pokémon, the attack does 140 damage on top of the standard 140 damage—a whopping 280 damage in all! The caveat is that you have to discard all Energy from Ogerpon after utilizing this tactic. Additionally, Ogerpon has defensive capabilities: as long as it’s on your Bench, it can prevent all damage done to it by attacks (both your own and those of your opponent). Like all Pokémon ex, your opponent gets to claim two Prize cards when Ogerpon is Knocked Out, but it’s well worth the sacrifice to have this smoldering Mask Pokémon at your side.

Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex

Illustrator Yano Keiji’s stunning foray into capturing the mystery and power of Ogerpon continues with this Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex. Unlike its fiery counterpart, Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex is portrayed in cool tones and resembles a stained-glass masterpiece. The art evokes a sense of serenity that is directly at odds with the Pokémon ex’s devastating attacks. Its Sob attack does 20 damage and will leave opponents sobbing when they can’t retreat. Once you have your opponent right where you want them, unleash Torrential Pump for 100 damage. You also have the option of shuffling 3 Energy attached to this Pokémon into your deck to do 120 damage to one of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon. Like its Hearthflame Mask counterpart, Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex prevents all damage from being done to it by attacks—both your own and those of your opponent—as long as it remains on your Bench. Also like Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex, if an opponent Knocks Out this Pokémon, they will get to claim two Prize cards. But it seems well worth the risk to rain the terror that is Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex down upon your enemies!

Secret Box

The return of ACE SPEC cards poses a highly anticipated opportunity to add spice to your next battle. These cards are so powerful that you can only have one ACE SPEC card in your deck, but Secret Box should be a contender for that slot. This Item card can only be used if you discard 3 other cards from your hand. However, it allows you to search your deck for an Item card, a Pokémon Tool card, a Supporter card, and a Stadium card, reveal them, and add them to your hand. Every Pokémon TCG player knows that building a powerful deck is only half the battle: figuring out how to get the cards you need into your hands at the right time is just as important. Fortunately, you can play as many Item cards as you want during your turn, as long as only one of those is an ACE SPEC card.

Magcargo ex

Turn up the heat with the Lava Pokémon as a powerful Pokémon ex and Tera Pokémon! Magcargo ex’s Hot Magma attack does 70 damage and leaves your opponent’s Active Pokémon Burned. On top of that, its Ground Burn attack does a minimum of 140 damage. From there, if you discard the top card of each player’s deck, it will do an additional 140 damage for each Energy card that is discarded. Magcargo ex might burn brightly, but if it’s Knocked Out, you will pay the price—two Prize cards to your opponent. Illustrator PLANETA Yamashita’s Magcargo ex has an endearing sense of delight on its face, as though in wonder at its own Tera Pokémon transformation.

Drakloak

Drakloak might be known as the Caretaker Pokémon, but that won’t stop it from fiercely headbutting opponents in your next battle! Illustrator cochi8i captures Drakloak with a cheerful Dreepy at its side and a sunset at its back. Drakloak and Dreepy share enthusiastic, mischievous expressions that suggest that the pair can handle themselves in battle. Drakloak’s Recon Directive Ability allows you to look at the top 2 cards in your deck and put 1 of them into your hand once per turn. It also has a fairly straightforward Dragon Headbutt attack that does 70 damage—and sounds like a lot of fun to execute!
