Complete and Cool Pokémon Evolution Chains in Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—151

In this special expansion, artists get the opportunity to depict an entire Pokémon Evolution chain.

The recent Pokémon Trading Card Game: Scarlet & Violet—151 expansion is unique in that it highlights the first 151 Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Kanto region. Another fantastic aspect of this set is that every stage of an Evolution chain is illustrated by the same artist, something that seldom happens in the Pokémon TCG.

Let’s take a look at how these artists depict a Pokémon as it evolves and grows across a series of cards. Then see what other matching lines you can find as you open your own Scarlet & Violet—151 booster packs.

Zubat and Golbat

Zubat looks especially fierce as it swoops through a cave on its card. With fangs bared, it’s emitting what appears to be some form of sonic attack (perhaps its Revealing Echo Ability). Interestingly, when Zubat evolves into Golbat, artist Scav opts to show us a scene that looks as though it was viewed through a fish-eye lens. This gives both the Pokémon and the landscape a slightly unnerving appearance—very fitting given the somewhat creepy nature of these Pokémon.

Growlithe and Arcanine

The two cards that make up this Evolution chain perfectly capture the growth of their Pokémon subjects. In artist Atsushi Furusawa’s artwork, Growlithe is certainly living up to its category title as the Puppy Pokémon—with a wide grin and a playful vibe, it bounds through a field amid blue skies and billowing clouds. This is a young Pokémon at the start of its journey. In contrast, Growlithe’s evolved form, Arcanine, is standing tall and proud, and it’s looking especially tough as it roams the mountainous landscape.

Geodude, Graveler, and Golem ex

  • Illustrator: Uta

Pay close attention to how the artist, Uta, has chosen to depict Geodude and its evolved forms in this trio of cards. Both Geodude and Graveler are shown using their arms to travel rocky paths. With a bit of imagination, you can almost see Geodude pulling itself along the ground before evolving into Graveler as it begins to work harder to pull itself up the side of a cliff. Finally, once Graveler has exerted enough effort through its climb, it evolves into Golem ex, a Pokémon with the power to burst through the card’s frame. Reaching the zenith feels like a true demonstration of the Pokémon’s newfound power.

Magikarp and Gyarados

Some may call Magikarp pathetic, but artist Kouki Saitou shows the true strength of this as it valiantly bounds up a waterfall. This artwork recalls the Chinese myth of the Dragon Gate, in which carp that can leap up the falls of the Yellow River are transformed into mighty dragons. So, too, does Magikarp evolve into the mighty Gyarados, as depicted on its card. Gyarados’s fearsome expression and the thrashing waves as it erupts from the water tell us that this Pokémon is anything but pathetic.

Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite

Dratini’s Evolution chain, as envisioned by artist Sanosuke Sakuma, demonstrates how the environment in which a Pokémon feels the most comfortable can change with its Evolution. As a Basic Pokémon, little Dratini is chilling out underwater, and as it evolves into Dragonair, it swims up to the water’s surface. Dragonair’s expression seems to be one of curiosity and wonder at it looks upward at the moonlit sky. Finally, once it evolves into Dragonite, the Pokémon is free to leave the safety of the ground and soar among the clouds. The look of pure joy on Dragonite’s face suggests that this Pokémon is delighted to have finally reached its final evolved form.

There are many more Evolution chains drawn by single artists to discover in the Scarlet & Violet—151 expansion. Enjoy looking for complete sets, Trainers!
