Registeel is a Steel-type Legendary Pokémon originally discovered in the Hoenn region. Registeel’s body, which was tempered by pressure underground over tens of thousands of years, is a strange material harder than any kind of metal. Learn which Pokémon will be most effective in Raid Battles against Registeel, how to catch Registeel after winning a Raid Battle, and how best to use the Iron Pokémon after you’ve caught it. 

Which Pokémon to Use in an Registeel Raid in Pokémon GO

As a Steel-type Pokémon, Registeel is vulnerable to Fire-, Fighting-, and Ground-type attacks. When selecting Pokémon for your Registeel Raid Battle lineup, it helps to choose Pokémon that have a Fast Attack and a Charged Attack of one of these types if you want to deal as much damage as possible. It’s not necessary to choose only Fire-, Fighting-, or Ground-type Pokémon, but a Pokémon that shares a type with these attacks will benefit from a same-type attack bonus, which will allow these attacks to deal an additional 20% damage.

If you have multiple Pokémon that know Fire-, Fighting-, or Ground-type attacks, choose the Pokémon with the highest CP and best overall stats. Remember that speed of victory affects how many Premier Balls you will receive at the conclusion of a successful Raid Battle, so bring your strongest Pokémon and defeat Registeel as quickly as you can.

Make the Most of Premier Balls and Berries

After a successful Registeel raid, you’ll have a limited number of Premier Balls you can use to catch Registeel, so make each one count. You can earn extra Premier Balls for battling with friends and defeating Registeel more quickly.

In an encounter with Registeel, your chance of catching it is greatest when the target ring is small enough for you score Excellent Throws. Throwing Curveballs can improve your chances even more. But work within your abilities—if you don't think you can reliably make Excellent Curveball Throws, aim for Nice Throws or Great Throws rather than risk missing the target ring completely.

Registeel isn’t going to make it easy on you by sitting still while you’re trying to catch it. Don’t waste your Premier Balls by throwing while it’s moving around. Watch Registeel to get a feel for its cycle of movement and the pauses in between the cycles. During one of these pauses, wait for the target ring to reappear, and then throw as it starts to grow smaller to increase your odds of making a Great Throw or an Excellent Throw.

Berries can help you catch Registeel. A Razz Berry will make Registeel easier to catch, and a Golden Razz Berry will make it much easier to catch. If you find yourself failing to land any throws, a Nanab Berry will calm Registeel, making its movements less erratic and allowing you to make precise throws more easily. If you need extra Registeel Candy, using a Silver Pinap Berry will make Registeel easier to catch and grant you extra Candy when you catch it.

Buddy Pokémon with a Buddy Level of Great Buddy or higher have the Catch Assist Perk. If a Pokémon—even a Legendary Pokémon—deflects a Poké Ball, your buddy might bounce it back for a second catch opportunity!

Like all Legendary Pokémon, Registeel is tricky to catch, so don’t be discouraged if it escapes. Get a second wind by stocking up on useful items—like Max Potions, Max Revives, and Golden Razz Berries—and try again.

What To Do with Registeel Once You’ve Caught It

As a Steel-type Pokémon, Registeel is resistant to Normal-, Grass-, Ice-, Poison-, Flying-, Psychic-, Bug-, Rock-, Dragon-, Steel-, and Fairy-type attacks. With resistance to a whopping 11 types of attack, impressive bulk, and a Fast Attack (Lock-On) that generates energy quickly, Registeel is an extremely popular choice in the GO Battle League. Registeel is especially popular in the Great League and the Ultra League. In the Great League, Registeel is a strong counter to commonly seen Pokémon such as Noctowl, Lanturn, Azumarill, Skarmory, and Bastiodon. When putting together your Ultra League lineup, consider that Registeel can put up a fight against the Ultra League regulars Walrein, Giratina, Cresselia, Talonflame, and Obstagoon.

At the 2023 San Diego Regional Championships on January 7 and 8, runner-up CalebPeng relied heavily on Registeel to absorb damage that would knock out less bulky Pokémon while weakening opponents’ attacks with Zap Cannon. He also used Registeel to challenge prominent Dark-type Pokémon like Umbreon with Focus Blast. Registeel also appeared frequently in the Pokémon GO World Championships in London in August 2022—the runner-up godanhada used Registeel as his lead Pokémon in his first battle against champion DancingRob.

While Registeel is a powerful Pokémon within the GO Battle League, it’s important to power it up as much as possible to maximize its efficiency in battle. Being competitive in the Ultra League will require using lots of Registeel Candy XL. Participate in as many Registeel raids as possible to earn both the Registeel Candy and Registeel Candy XL you’ll need to power up this Pokémon. Pinap Berries will come in handy, allowing you to earn extra Candy when catching Registeel.

Teaching your Pokémon a second Charged Attack will make it more versatile in the GO Battle League. When choosing a Fast Attack and two Charged Attacks for Registeel, there are a few strong options. The Normal-type Lock-On is the most popular Fast Attack because it generates energy quickly. It deals very little damage, but it powers up Registeel’s Charged Attacks rapidly. The Fighting-type Charged Attack Focus Blast deals significant damage and is effective against many Pokémon types. The Electric-type Charged Attack Zap Cannon requires an Elite Charged TM to learn, but it’s effective against many GO Battle League mainstays, including Pidgeot, Azumarill, Walrein, and Tapu Fini. In addition, Zap Cannon  has a significant chance of dropping an opponent’s Attack. Teaching this Legendary Pokémon a second Charged Attack requires a significant amount of Registeel Candy and Stardust, so try to catch as many Registeel as possible to get you there faster.
