An Early Look at Cards from the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paradox Rift Expansion

See Mantyke as an illustration rare, plus Chien-Pao, Gholdengo ex, and more from the upcoming expansion.

Temporal turmoil is coming on November 3, 2023. That’s the release date of the latest Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Paradox Rift, where you’ll find brand-new Ancient and Future Pokémon along with more Pokémon ex, including type-shifted Tera Pokémon ex. With over 180 cards in the expansion, there will be a lot to discover. Join us for a sneak peek at some of the cards that can be found in this rift.

Mantyke

The adorable little Water-type Pokémon Mantyke is looking even cuter than usual as it peeks in to say hello to an underwater research lab on this gorgeous illustration rare card. Mantyke—as the card text explains—swims alongside schools of Remoraid to help them repel attackers. That spirit of assistance is reflected on Mantyke’s card in its lone attack, Buoyant Healing. Instead of causing damage to your opponent’s Pokémon, this attack helps your team by healing 120 damage from one of your Benched Pokémon—with no attack cost. What a good aquatic friend!

Chien-Pao

Chien-Pao is looking particularly fearsome on its card as it leaps into action, its sword-like fangs bared as it lands with such power that it shatters the icy ground. This strength can be felt in Chien-Pao’s Wrathful Blade attack, which does 130 damage. The attack does require you to discard two Energy from the Pokémon when you use it, but with its Snow Bringer attack, which lets you reattach two Basic Water Energy cards from your discard pile, it won’t take much to get this Legendary Pokémon ready for another attack.

Gholdengo ex

’Ey you! Looking to bulk up your hand? Gholdengo ex may prove to be your (literal) golden child in that regard. Thanks to its Coin Bonus Ability, you can draw a card during your turn. Unless, of course, Gholdengo ex is in the Active Spot—in that case, you can draw two cards! If you end up with a wealth of Energy cards in your hand, you can Make It Rain on your opponent. This attack does 50 damage for each Basic Energy card you discard from your hand. Ka-ching!

Absol

Artist Shinji Kanda’s trademark sketchy style looks positively stunning on this card. The multicolored lines that comprise the background elements contrast beautifully with the blue and white of Absol. If you’re the type of player who likes to mix up their hand, this card could be useful in your deck thanks to its Drawareness attack, which lets you discard until you have four or fewer cards in hand (you can discard your whole hand if you want!) and then draw back up to five. It’s a great way to rework your strategy if you find yourself in a pinch. And you might draw a Pokémon Tool card to boost Absol’s Enhanced Blade attack!

Professor Sada’s Vitality

If you need some assistance powering up your Ancient Pokémon, Professor Sada is here to help on this Supporter card. By playing this card, you can pick two of your Ancient Pokémon and attach a Basic Energy card from your discard pile to each one. Not only that, but you also get to draw three cards, bolstering your hand. Thanks, Professor!

You’ll find these and many more cards when the Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paradox Rift expansion releases on November 3, 2023.
