Another Look at Cards from the Scarlet & Violet—Paldean Fates expansion

Ditto, Espathra, and Wugtrio appear as Shiny Pokémon, and a pair of Trainers from Paldea are featured in fantastic new artwork.

Things are looking especially shiny in the Pokémon Trading Card Game as the upcoming expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Paldean Fates, features Shiny Pokémon galore. Arriving on January 26, 2024, this expansion includes over 240 cards—including over 100 Shiny Pokémon! Join us for an early look at some of these exciting Pokémon along with a couple of the new Trainer cards that you can find.

Ditto

Ditto may not have a very elaborate appearance, but that doesn’t make the overwhelming joy of this Shiny Ditto any less apparent! One look at it just might transform a day into a happy one. In fact, transformation is this Pokémon’s specialty, as evidenced by its Transformative Start Ability. Once during your first turn, if this Pokémon is in the Active Spot, you may search your deck for a Basic Pokémon and put the chosen Pokémon into Ditto’s place. Ditto will end up in the discard pile in the process, but it’s an exciting strategy that has even seen use at the highest levels of tournament play.

Espathra ex

Most Pokémon ex in Scarlet & Violet—Paldean Fates were released in previous expansions, but Espathra ex is new to the game, dazzling fans with its Shiny appearance right off the bat. Take care, though—this Tera Pokémon ex might be alluring with its unique colors and shining jewel, but Espathra is known to have a vicious temperament. Its Dazzling Gaze Ability increases the cost of your opponent’s Active Pokémon’s attack by 1 Colorless Energy. Ordinarily, this Ability would just be disruptive, but Espathra ex’s Psy Ball attack does 30 more damage for each Energy attached to both Active Pokémon, making it a worthy attacker too!

Wugtrio

Oh, to be a Wugtrio swaying at the bottom of the ocean. Just look at this group of friendly Garden Eel Pokémon nestling themselves among the plants and rocks of the briny deep—one is taking a nap, one is swaying from left to right, and another Wugtrio in the center of the artwork is notably Shiny in appearance. Illustrator Tetsu Kayama’s pointillism-like style fantastically emphasizes the sandy textures and vibrant colors of the sea floor and the long, eel-like Pokémon that call this scene home.

Nemona

Are you ready to battle? Nemona was first released as part of the Scarlet & Violet expansion as a common card, but this is the first time we’re seeing Nemona’s vibrant personality take up the entire card frame as an ultra rare. Based on the colorful image of a Poké Ball on the ground, we can assume that she’s standing at the center of the battle court in Mesagoza—a perfect location for her never-ending desire to battle alongside her Pokémon.

Clive

This is the first Trainer card artwork we’ve seen from illustrator Taiga Kayama, and it’s as unique as it is amazing. With an adorable Chibi art style, Kayama portrays Clive as he lurks about, seemingly on some sort of surveillance mission among Team Star. There’s so much going on that you’re likely to notice a new detail on each viewing, so keep your eyes peeled and take in every aspect that this card has to offer. On that note, Clive also allows you to sneak a peek at your opponent’s hand and draw 2 cards for each Supporter card you find there—an effect that’s a perfect match for this stylish sleuth of a Trainer.
