No matter how you battle with the upcoming Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion, you’ll be battling in style. Sword & Shield—Battle Styles features over 160 cards, and it introduces new Single Strike and Rapid Strike style cards. These variants can affect how you assemble your deck, so choose cards that work with your gameplay strategy. Along with these differing styles, there are even more new Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX that will increase your team’s strength and look great in your collection. Take a look at some of the awesome cards that you’ll find in the Sword & Shield—Battle Styles expansion when it launches on March 19, 2021.

Single Strike Urshifu V

Urshifu bursts into the Pokémon TCG in both Single Strike and Rapid Strike styles. The mighty Legendary Pokémon is delivering a fierce blow with its clenched fist as Single Strike Urshifu V, which reflects its powerful attacks. Its Laser Focus attack is great to help you prepare Urshifu to strike. Requiring only one Fighting Energy, this attack lets you search your deck for up to two additional Fighting Energy cards to attach to this Pokémon. One use of this move sets you up to use Single Strike Urshifu V’s Impact Blow attack, which does 180 damage to your opponent’s Active Pokémon. Just be aware that you won’t be able to use Impact Blow again on your next turn, so plan ahead.

Rapid Strike Urshifu V

The furious blur of claws on this card certainly let you know that this is Rapid Strike Urshifu V. With 220 HP, this Pokémon has the same amount of health as its Single Strike counterpart, but Rapid Strike Urshifu V comes equipped with different attacks. Its Strafe attack only does a meager 30 damage, but it also provides a quick and easy way to move this Pokémon out of the Active Spot, allowing you to bring one of your Benched Pokémon forward. To do any serious damage, look to the Legendary Pokémon’s Hundred Furious Blows attack, which hits for a rapid 150 damage. Unlike Single Strike Urshifu V’s Impact Blow, there is no limitation for using this attack multiple turns in a row—this is Rapid Strike Urshifu V after all! These Urshifu V cards are just two examples of the different Single Strike and Rapid Strike cards you’ll find in this expansion, so keep your eyes open for other cards that utilize this exciting new gameplay mechanic.

Tapu Koko V

In the past, Tapu Koko has proven to be a valuable member of some competitive level Pokémon TCG decks, and now the Island Guardian returns to the game as a Pokémon V! Tapu Koko V looks mighty intimidating as it brandishes its claws and bristles with electrical energy. And, depending on how ready your opponent is for battle, its Spiral Thunder attack could potentially do a lot of harm. The attack hits for only 20 damage initially, but it does an additional 40 damage for each Energy attached to all your opponent’s Pokémon. You can bide your time and let your opponent power their team up only to have their efforts come crashing back at them, or you can evolve Tapu Koko V into Tapu Koko VMAX…

Tapu Koko VMAX

That’s this Tapu Koko VMAX, of course. This Dynamax form of the Island Guardian is surrounded by multicolored swirls, and it makes for a very beautiful card. As a Pokémon VMAX, Tapu Koko VMAX’s HP has increased to 320, and it now has the Max Shock attack. This attack requires two Lightning Energy and one Colorless Energy, and it hits for 180 damage, which is certainly great...but if you happen to have more Prize cards remaining than your opponent, the attack will also Paralyze your opponent’s Active Pokémon! This could lead to big trouble for your rival.

Flapple VMAX

This Gigantamax Flapple VMAX is looking large, loud, and lovable. That monstrous wide grin might cause your opponents to underestimate this Pokémon, but they do so at their own peril. Not only is Flapple VMAX packing 320 HP, but its G-Max Rolling attack can hit for a whopping 250 damage. Just be careful—if Flapple VMAX has taken any damage, G-Max Rolling becomes less effective. For every damage counter on this Pokémon, the attack does 10 less damage. You’ll need Flapple VMAX at peak HP to take full advantage of its power.
