Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket’s Mythical Island expansion brings lots of beautiful new cards to your next booster pack—but it’s got more than just good looks! The new expansion will feature cards that are sure to inspire brand new decks—and augment your existing ones. There are plenty of promising cards to discover, but we’ve narrowed the list down to a few options worth considering as you add them to your collection. Read on to learn more about how the Serperior, Celebi ex, Vaporeon, Mew ex, and Mythical Slab cards are likely to influence strategies in Pokémon TCG Pocket.

Energy acceleration is the key to success, and while Grass-type decks have typically relied on Lilligant so far, Serperior takes it up a notch for both old and new deck archetypes. The Regal Pokémon’s Jungle Totem Ability makes each Grass Energy twice as effective for Grass-type Pokémon, paring down the hefty attack costs of Pokémon like the Stage 2 Venusaur ex. Serperior is also a Stage 2 Pokémon, though, so it’s likely to be more consistent when paired with Basic Pokémon like the new Celebi ex or Dhelmise.

The physical Pokémon TCG has featured numerous attacks with an infinite damage ceiling, but Celebi ex’s Powerful Bloom is the first of them to debut in Pokémon TCG Pocket. Powerful Bloom isn’t initially as efficient as other coin flip attacks—Zapdos ex can potentially do 200 damage for three Lightning Energy, for example—but paired with the incoming Serperior, it immediately can dish out 200 damage for just two Grass Energy. The attack only gets more efficient (and less likely to flub) with each attachment, so it’s worth keeping an eye on Celebi ex and Serperior moving forward.

Misty has been a powerful—and not so powerful—form of Energy acceleration for Water-type decks, but apart from relying on coin flips, it has the drawback that you must choose a single Pokémon to give all of the Energy to. That’s not necessarily bad, but flexibility can make or break wins and losses. Vaporeon provides extra flexibility with its Wash Out Ability, allowing Water Energy to be moved from your Benched Pokémon to your Active Pokémon at will. This can be used to retreat the Active Pokémon, power up a new attacker, or even both, if there’s enough Water Energy in play.

Mew ex’s Genome Hacking attack has seen some success in the Pokémon TCG’s standard format, but this Mew ex is a bit different. Pokémon TCG Pocket’s Mew ex doesn’t have an Ability that draws cards, so it’s likely to be more niche, but being able to copy a powerful attack for three Colorless Energy can still prove useful. The attack cost makes it a potential tech inclusion in most decks, but the New Species Pokémon is likely to reach its full potential alongside Gardevoir in a Mewtwo ex deck, where it can be powered up more quickly.

Consistency is the name of the game, and Mythical Slab is a strong addition for Psychic-type decks to find their pieces at the right time. With no way to find Evolution Pokémon outside of drawing them with Professor’s Research, Mythical Slab provides another way to find these Pokémon at the right time. With Mewtwo ex decks relying on Gardevoir for Energy acceleration, you can bet that this card will make an appearance.
